Neo - The lightning fast template for new Blogger

Neo template is not just some CSS magic. It is an ultra-fast template with which one can navigate through your blog very quickly. As a result, your visitors would enjoy their stay in your blog. It employs the cutting edge technology called AJAX (in particular JSON) and makes best use of the advanced features of new Blogger such as Label feeds and Per-post comment feeds. And it's free too! To summarize it's features:

1. A visitor can navigate through your blog much faster because the entire page (all the sidebar stuff) won't be reloaded while viewing every post. When he selects a post from the list of recent posts (or posts under a particular label), the selected post and its comments are displayed instantly. When he selects a label, the list of posts under that label are loaded asynchronously too.

2. Newer comments are shown before older ones instead of the usual oldest to newest order. Also, comments are divided into pages with 10 comments in each page. Both these features make a big difference if your blog gets many comments.

3. Rounded corner boxes and pleasant colors add to the visual impact.

But, it does have some limitations. It doesn't go well with blogs that use Adsense/other ads because it results in fewer page impressions. Please go through the Neo FAQ to find out how to modify Neo (to show comments from oldest to newest order) and understand other limitations/requirements of Neo to work properly.

I am using a modified version of Neo in this blog. Check out the demo blog to get a feel of how Neo would work with your posts. To this basic template, you can add header image, change colors/fonts using the new Blogger's WYSIWYG interface etc. Various blogs using Neo are showcased in this page. You can see how people have customized the look and feel of Neo.

Neo template is available free of cost. More details in this post. Neo awaits you!

I love this UI.
I want to be able to include a box that has a tabbed feature to make a list of "recent posts" "popular posts" and "featured posts", much like over at gigaom.com. Let me know if you're interested and what it would take. Cheers, Ryan

Unknown said...

Ryan,

It is possible to do something similar with tabs and rounded corners. I will show you how if you buy the template.

True Life said...

Fuctionality-wise it may be a nice improvement, but the design is rather weak.

Unknown said...

True life,

I believe the design is definitely better than templates provided by Blogger. If you are referring to fonts/colors etc, those are easily changeable in new Blogger. One shirt doesn't fit all, so I thought I will leave it to you.

Ramani, is there any way for me to keep my Minima template look, plus 2 sidebars, which I have now, while integrating this with your Neo?

Thanks.

Rock

Unknown said...

Rock,

As I have just updated this post, it is possible to retain your sidebar widgets. Neo does have 3 columns. Regarding the look, it comes with the default colors but as always, you can play with the colors.

nice!
i won't mind paying...i need to save some money since i'm still a student...one question though: do i need to change my blog's template? bcoz i kinda like how it is now and i simply want to integrate the part where only a particular aspect of the blog is loaded...will that be too hard to do?

Unknown said...

But Waz, that's the crux of the template :) So, you don't want rounded corners etc?

Deepak said...

Excellent work with the template.
I liked the revamped navigation through the labels.

You should be extending this to quickload from archives also. :)

Unknown said...

Deepak,

thanks. I am leaving archives alone so that search engines can pickup post permalinks to index. As Protesto mentioned, not having hyperlinks might affect search engine performance.

Hi Ramani, I wish you a very happy, safe, and prosperous new year. Thanks for your suggestions! I have changed the banner picture. You can see my blog at www.vetimm.blogspot.com.

Unknown said...

Devender,

It looks great! Now, can I add your blog to the list of blogs using Neo?

Sure!

Thank's Ramani for the help and the great Neo template you provided for my blog. It is great.

Neo Comments Features for other New Blogger Templates: Amazing your new Neo Template! Your Neo Template offer is also interesting but I really like some specific features that my Minima Stretch template with only one sidebar is offering me now. I wonder if they are possibilities to implement your Neo Comments Features:(New comments shown before older ones, Subdivided page of 10 comments) on other New Blogger templates like my Minima Stretch template for example.

well, just want to inform you that NEO Template is set up in my blog........

cool............
great............
wow............

speechless!

hello dude, i will respect you if you can do this "make any one can create thier own topic/post to my blog" just like a forum buz, no need to register..

My greatly modified template is almost complete. I still haven't gotten the header graphic in, for some reason it isn't cooperating and I have an extra line in my blogroll in my dropdown menu.

It loads much faster, most of the slowness seems to be blogger related.

Neat and clean, just the way I like it.

Neo Comments Features for other New Blogger Templates-Part 2: I have reformulated and elaborated my comment entitled «Neo Comments Features for other New Blogger Templates » posted on your blog on January 11, 2007. I have posted the details at Blogger Hacks Wiki under the title «Inversed and Subdivided Comments Section Hack for New Blogger Templates». I’m hoping that I will have a reaction from you.

Unknown said...

Alain,

That's a pretty detailed hack request from you. Due to lack of time, I don't think I can make Neo-like comments for other templates. Also, there are so many templates out there. But, other hackers can give it a shot.

Like many of your readers, I am thrilled at the idea of loading only what changes. How logical! But I don't want to change my template unless I have to. Could your neo functionality be applied to my (new blogger) template? Of course I would pay!!

Ranmani ... Many thanks for that response, I got it working. Now, I want to set it up just like this page is .... where the label buttons change what appears in the second column. I'll poke around here and see if I can find the instructions.

Idea Works

Howdy,

I am about to launch a major trek with National Geographic and want to use your neo blogger for my blog. I would like to work with you closely on setting this up. I want to do it "myself" because we hope that our community will replicate it in a whole series of blogs.

I am willing to pay. What I would like you to do first is convert this "test" blog into Neo so we can start playing with the details.

I am waiting for my PayPal account approval so I can send you some money.

Seems I lost that last comment. But I said that I was starting a major project with National Geographic doing a trek. I want to use your Neo template and was wondering if you could put the following blog in Neo so I can start playing with it.

I can pay. Please email at mfay@ngs.org.

Mike Fay said...

Oh yeah and I would like to have the two reference columns on the right side of the blog not on the left side-ie so the posts appear on the left hand side.

Mike,

I am currently very busy at work, so I am going to stop selling Neo until I can devote enough time for it. sorry.

Looney Mom™ said...

Hi Ramani. I know you are busy these days but I wanted to thank you for the Neo template. I tweaked it and skinned it and now it's live. Check it out.

I'd still really like the peek-a-boo posts and label widget that I had on your hacked version of "minima". If you ever get those to work with this will you please let me know? Thanks man.

You rock man! I hope work eases up soon! Take it easy.

Unknown said...

WOW! I love the design and the colors, Liz! I got peekaboo posts working with Neo before. If I find the changes, I will send it to you.

Looney Mom™ said...

Thanks! This template is going to keep me busy because I plan on changing it up OFTEN!

BTW, for some reason Neo's feeling a little under the weather today. Posts never stop updating and when you click on a label nothing happens. I noticed too that Hans' "Recent Comments" widget isn't displaying anything. Maybe something to do with the json feeds? Like I even know what this is... I'm sad that Neo's not working like he's supposed to. I noticed your blog is doing the same thing. Please give Neo some medicine; I miss him. :D

Thanks.

Looney Mom™ said...

Oh, and another thing; new comments don't show up under the post...

:(

Looney Mom™ said...

Oh! Ramani - sorry I'm being a pest, but one other tweak that I can't figure out is to add some way to get back to "Recent Posts" after clicking on a label. I saw that TechGarden has a "Recent Posts" link as a label but I can't figure out how to add it myself - believe me I tried! So that might be something you can add WHEN YOU HAVE THE TIME. But I would prefer it to be an independent link on the bottom of list - kinda like you have the "newer/older" links under the posts...

I'm not trying to be demanding - I know you're busy. I just LOVE this Neo template and I just want it to be TOTALLY optimized. If I knew how to write javascript I would do it myself but I don't so that's why I'm bugging you. ;)

Peace. Have a great day. I'll try to refrain from hounding you all day! LOL!

Unknown said...

Hi Liz,

Blogger folks have broken the json feeds. That's why many hacks are not working. I will inform the Blogger developer about this and hopefully, they will fix it soon.

Recent posts link is easy. Just add the link with href being javascript:fetchLatestPosts("");

You can always ask me for some changes. If I know how to do it, I will tell you.

Looney Mom™ said...

Thanks Ramani!!

JJ, you can change the appearance of your google shared items in google reader.

How about the background of the entries in "Hack Resources"? How can you implement the background?

JJ,

That's using the vertical tabs hack in Hoctro's blog. Link is there in that list

Ramani,

since yesterday I am not seeing my recent posts along side the real recent posts, they seem to be outdated. Any clue?

Appreciate your assistence here!

Thanks!

Unknown said...

Hi Tarry,

I don't know what you mean. When I checked your blog, I saw posts from Aug 20th, 19th etc. Are they not the latest?

Angelus said...

Ramani,

The comments footer? or the part where it says "no comments yet", is stuck. On posts that have comments, the footer still reads "no comments yet" Is there an adjustment I can make? I've looked, but I don't know much about code.

Thanks in advance ...

Angelus said...

Ramani,

thanks for taking the time to help. I've replaced the code with the one provided, but no change. Still no comments showing...

Angelus said...

Ramani,

Well I got the comments showing, I reverted the widget templates to default, but I lost three widget
functions.

First being the Neo button.

Second is I lost the cloud function on the labels list. (but got it back). =)

Third is I lost the background color of the posts section...

...I need the code for the Neo button.

...and do you have any thoughts as to how I can change background color on posts to #191919 ?

sorry to be such a bother ...thanks.

Hi, again, Ramani. I have a problem with NEO (probably the problem is me), may be you can help me: Just, when you have time, take a look at flashosfera.blogspot; down in the sidebar, neo labels load the posts' list, but don't show the posts when you click on them. Can you help me? I'm shure I made a mistake somewhere... Thanks, theres is no hurry. Cheers.

I am so upset. I am new at all this and spent the mroning trying to get this FABULOUE template to load. I keep getting this error:
Your template could not be parsed as it is not well-formed. Please make sure all XML elements are closed properly.
XML error message: The processing instruction target matching "[xX][mM][lL]" is not allowed.

I know ramani said he was busy but can anyone help. I LOVE this template.

Thanks so much!!!!

Unknown said...

Ramani,

Thank you a lot to share such a wonderful template with us. I liked the style very much.

By the way, I was troubled by the no-comment-show-up problem for a while, and decided to take a look at it today. After a little bit debugging, I found the problem was actually caused by a minor change on google's server-end (a change on json return value).

Here is a simple fix, to change Line 128 in neo.js
from
commentContent[i] = entry.content.$t;
to
commentContent[i] = entry.summary.$t;

Finally, thanks again for your efforts.

That's a good find!

Ramani,

FYI --for some reason the "Quick Edit" icon and feature has dropped out/off of the Neo template. It still appears on standard Blogger templates but not on Neo. It happened yesterday.

Today, within blogger layout, I changed my background colors and lost my rounded corners on heading, sidebar, recent post, and post section.

How do I reset my layout to rounded corners?

Rick Warren said...

Correction to my prior post on losing rounded corners. It only happens on IE7. Firefox displays the rounded corners.

Unknown said...

Rick,

If you're referring to Neo template, yes, rounded corners works only with firefox.

Rick Warren said...

Thanks, I guess I had never noticed that they did not work with IE until I changed the background colors.

Sorry to bother you.
